"Apehood" - Planet of the Apes Meets Boyhood

Two movies came out last weekend: The long awaited sequel to Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Richard Lanklater's groundbreaking indie darling Boyhood, filmed over the course of 12 years alongside a child growing up. Both were amazing movies in their own right, but Nelson Carvajal found a common link between the two features.

This is where Apehood comes into play- a fun mashup trailer starring Caesar as a young chimp growing up in an ever changing world. It's not quite an all American upbringing as the more innocent tale of Boyhood- There's a little more along the lines of unintended evolution, deadly primordial viruses and the extinction of humanity as a whole going for the whole Planet of the Apes angle. Folk Art Meets Pop Culture In Takao Nagawa's Ukiyo-e Character Series

Ukiyo-e is a very distinct form of Japanese woodcut printing, and Japanese illustrator Takao Nagawa decided to flex his stylistic muscles to bring us a series of truly fun prints featuring classic characters from anime and pop culture in general. Featuring characters like Goku, Yoda and Kamen Rider clad in ornate Kabuki outfits and samurai outfits, this is probably the first mashup of this kind I've seen come from an actual Japanese artist versus the typical Tumblr denizen/illustrator.

Hotline Fortress 2 - Wrong Number

Youtube user Nonamesleft was so inspired by the slick Hotline Miami 2 trailer that he set out to recreate it in an unlikely format- Valve's Source Filmmaker. The filmmaking engine is the same one used internally by the Team Fortress and Dota 2 teams to create the stunning cinematics to promote the game, and Nonamesleft seems to be one of the community users who's mastered the usage of the format.

Using a bunch of Team Fortress 2 models, a few custom made chainsaws and some really slick cinematography, Nonames left faithfully translated the top down trailer into the 3D realm with some amazing results. In lesser hands this would have been a cool fan film, but this legitimately looks like a professional effort for a Valve game I'd love to see. In the meanwhile I'll stick to anticipating Hotline Miami 2, which should be released sometime later this year. Check out the trailer that inspired the homage after the break.

What If Akira Was Created By Jack Kirby? And Other Mashup Goodness By Mark D'Alfonso

Michael D'Alfonso eats, breathes and sleeps mashups. He refuses to take a character and present it straight up as it is, instead opting to stick in a blender of pop culture to create something that's striking in it's familiarity yet always unfamiliar in it's presentation. The piece of art that really caught my attention was his Jack Kirby styled Akira tribute, which absolutely nailed it on the head, straight down to the worn and torn comic cover look.

While some people look down on fanartists as simply pandering to fanbases for attention, if done correctly you can get some really cool and original takes on popular characters. Check out more of his awesome work after the break.

Doraemon Meets Akira at the 2020 Neo-Tokyo Olympic Games

Did you know? Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira manga correctly predicted that the Tokyo summer Olympics would occur in the year 2020. Following the successful bid for the summer slot, Tokyo appointed Fujiko F. Fujio's famous Doraemon character to serve as a special ambassador/mascot for the upcoming games.

When animator Alex Pitarch put one and together, he felt an irresistible urge to mash these two revelations into an absolutely awesome mashup, starring Doraemon as Tetsuo in that infamous scene that scarred many minds across the world. Pitarch did an amazing job bringing this very strange animation to life, making it feel like it could have actually been part of the original landmark 1988 anime feature.

SUPER SMASH WARS 2: The Empire Smashes Back

Animator James Farr is on a rampage, albeit an extremely awesome mashup-y one. After the fantastic first part of Super Smash Wars uploaded a few months back, he's returned with a two part sequel and it's pretty dang cool.

Compared to the first entry, Super Smash Wars 2 is far more action packed and ends up playing out like an old school side-scroller than a game of Super Smash Bros. Farr does an incredible job at incorporating the Nintendo universe into Star Wars and if this entry is anything to go by, the final entry should be even better. I might even have to go out on a limb here and say I wouldn't mind seeing James Farr tackle the most recent Star Wars films (as much as we like to pretend they don't exist).

Eclectic Method - "Robocop"

Whether we like it or not, Robocop is getting the reboot treatment and is set to be release next month; The first major production by fledgling director José Padilha, it's set to either do well or fail miserably. The fact that it's getting a February release is a little disconcerting, as most movies from the 'wild west' January-March period are typically Hollywood's high risk or low budget leftovers. Nonetheless, Eclectic Method treated us to a fine Robocop flavored remix featuring cut together from the 1987 classic to mark his reincarnation.

Robocop is getting rebooted, directed by José Padilha with Gary Oldman, Samuel L Jackson and Michael Keaton. But remember the original that predicted a future in which the justice system was run by corporations and Detroit was nearing collapse? Well to jog your memory Eclectic Method has spliced it down and jumbled it up into a robostep video noise trac.

Star Trek - Power Rangers Style

Star Trek - Into Darkness was definitely not one of JJ Abram's finest moments, but Youtube user The Unusual Suspect figured out how to turn lemons into lemonade with this Power Rangers flavored remix of the franchise. STAR TREK, IN SPACE!

Super Smash Wars: A Link To The Hope Is a Beautiful Star Wars Treat

Animator James Farr knows his way to my cross-over fueled heart. While Disney may have purchased Star Wars for their evil bidding it's still nice to remember the golden days of Star Wars games on the SNES and the N64. 

In a 9-minute long mash-up of Star Wars and Nintendo, James Farr showcases just how awesome a Star Wars x Nintendo cross-over world could actually be. You can't argue that the Master Sword / Lightsaber combo isn't the coolest thing you've seen all day, admit it. The cast chosen by James Farr is absolutely perfect for their Star Wars counterparts, especially Birdo (You'll know it when you see it).

James Farr has a short history of mixing Nintendo with unlikely pieces of pop-culture and they seem to keep getting better. With his focus on on 80's and 90's films, it's not long until we see the Super Mario x Breakfast Club combo you've always dreamed about.

Kutiman - "Through Tokyo"

Musician/video mixer Kutiman spent a few weeks capturing the eclectic sights and sounds of Tokyo prior to remixing the entire range of footage and sounds into an incredible performance piece. Channeling a variety of sounds from traditional instruments like wind flutes (Fue), string instruments (Koto), a lute (Biwa) and other distinct instruments, Through Tokyo offers the distinct aural contrast of the modern and traditional aspects iof Japan melding together. Fantastic stuff..One of the coolest audio/visual mashups I've seen all year.

Back To The Future And Knight Rider Go Hand In Hand

Youtube user TheMoeFwacky created an awesome mashup of the Knight Rider theme with Back to the Future visuals- and it's a strangely perfect marriage. Sure, there's no Hasselhoff, but I would have taken time travel, DeLorean's and KITT over him any day of the week. Short and sweet.

Bartkira Is Out Of Control (In The Best Way Possible)

I can't make this stuff up. I'm in awe of what the internet has enabled us to do..No scratch that, the entire internet has lead up to this moment right here: A Simpsons flavored recreation of the entire Akira saga that Otomo masterfully crafted decades ago. The original comic/anime was for many their first taste of the mind blowing fruits that the Japanese anime industry had to offer, myself included. The Simpsons offered pop culture a more grown up taste of what syndicated Western cartoons could provide, with protagonists that were anything but role model quality. And in 20XX/2013? These two cultural juggernauts have collided in an absolutely incredible display of collective awesomeness, as marked by the incredibly active Bartkira blog.

Initiated by artist Ryan Humphrey, the project has grown to have over 700 active artists contributing to recreate the entire series in the ultimate collective project we've seen yet. The Tumblr blog is filled to the brim with samples of what's to come, including 'Bartkira'd' promotional materials, covers, sample pages and more. Check out just a few images from the incredible blog after the break starring Milhouse's dark decline, and praise the moment in time in which such a bizarre, yet wonderful idea came to be.

Eterna

What if over 100 blockbuster movies were edited into the ultimate epic trailer? That is what Vadzim Khudabets, an aspiring trailer editor set out to create as a means of showcasing his skills in Eterna, which is a pretty jaw dropping effort that also doubles as a potentially negative (Depending on your interpretation) showcase of homogeny in trailer creation over the past few years. Nonetheless I can't help but appreciate the sheer amount of effort it must have taken for Vadzim to scour this massive library for the perfect shots to execute Eterna in it's entirety.

Pogo - "What I Likes"

Pogo (Nick Bertke) returns to his Disney roots with his latest mashup following a rather interesting year of musical remixes centered around international travel, cartoons and cult movies. His latest endeavor focuses on Disney's 1964 live action/animated hybrid adaptation of P.L. Travers Mary Poppins, executed in his signature style. Nick also put together a little documentary on his time explaining what he's all about, including his approach to creating his unique audio/visual mashups, thoughts on life and doing live concerts, which you can check out after the break if you're so inclined.

2 Mello Returns With Nastlevania Mashup - The Triumphant Sequel To Chrono Jigga

Most gamers fall into one of two camps, Castlevania or Metroid. As much as I like scifi though, there's one thing that ultimately turned me into a Castlevania fanboy in the long run, and it was the music: The biggest culprit? Symphony Of The Night, the Playstation One era magnum opus to the Castlevania franchise; Often imitated, never surpassed.

If 2 Mello rings a bell, he's the producer responsible for bringing us the absolutely amazing Chrono Trigger/Jay-Z mashup album that was so good that it spread like wildfire through both gaming and non-gaming crowds alike. And he's made my year by releasing a followup featuring the vocal stylings of self proclaimed lyrical warrior Nas mashed with the most memorable, catchy tracks of the franchise, which you can sample below in it's entirety. As if that wasn't enough, 2 Mello is also offering the entire album download for free on his website.

Franchise - Animated Typography

Created by Animography, Franchise Animated is an amazing endeavor that enlisted the talents of 1 type designer (Font creator) and a total of 110 animators from around the world assigned to each and every character. Each participant was assigned a total of 4 colors, 24 frames and a template canvas to work their magic in After Effects, and the results speaks for themselves- A pretty damn amazing mashup of two different mediums into something altogether new.

The folks at Animography are offering all the After Effects files for Franchise on their website, at the very reasonable price of free. 

Billy Butcher's Videogame Pop Culture Mashups

Is it a game? A movie? A band? We don't know anymore, but it's undeniable that Brazilian based illustrator Butcher Billy created a series of truly amazing illustration pieces. Starting off with a solid foundation of classic videogames, the artist then proceeded to layer and dot these illustrations with elements of of pop culture in the form of vintage movies, rock stars, iconic Hollywood celebrities, anime icons and more to create some truly striking mashup imagery.

Created by studio Cumulus, 'Swear Words' is a pastiche of gif inspired cultural contrasts that dominate countries: Patriotism and pornography, conservatism and chaos, abstinence and excess. Presented in a series of rapid fire snippets, the result, this glitched out mashup (Similar to Girl Talk, Ludachrist and others) is in your face, and very NSFW at the same time.

Game Over Man - Videogames In Movies

Created by the folks over at Slacktory, Game Over Man is an enlightening 20 minute look into the collision of two pop culture mediums: Videogames and movies. Despite being handled in a rather half assed manner in most movies, it's an interesting look at to how engrained videogame culture has become in our society.
