New Arise-Helmed Ghost in The Shell Movie Announced for Summer 2015

The Ghost in the Shell news that's most been on everyone's lips lately is the announcement of Scarlet Johansson's leading role in the American adaptation directed by Rupert Sanders. Regardless on where you stand on the decision, take heart; we'll see more of Major Kusanagi and her counter-terrorist cohorts sooner than we might have thought. A new feature film tentatively titled 'Ghost in the Shell 2015' has been announced for release early this summer, produced by the team behind the Arise prequel tetralogy.

The first key visual for the film (shown above) features series protagonist Motoko Kusanagi in a pose typical for the franchise; The gorgeous technomancing cyborg warrior staring defiantly from behind a nest of wires and holographic overlays. To her left and right are near-identical prosthetic host bodies suspended in a ceaseless row of docking stations. What could it possibly mean? Will Motoko have to fight off duplicates of herself?

I thought that Arise was a serviceable re-imagining of the franchise's long-established relationships and depictions. I'm excited to see what Kazuchika Kise and Project I.G. bring to the table this time.

Impressive Movie Posters by Yura Shwedoff

(via)
Yura Shwedoff is a traditional painter and concept artist from Moscow who's created an absolutely stunning series of alternate posters for television, movies, animation and video-games.

Shwedoff's paintings emphasize some of the most iconic imagery of his subjects, from Peter Weller's jutting chin in Robocop to Sylvester Stallone breaking down into tears in Rambo First Blood. Out of all his posters, I'd have to say his renditions of Hotline Miami and True Detective are my favorites. See more of his collection after the break!

The Awesome Movie Art Of Rich Kelly

(Via)
I have to say that when we're doing these 'art of' posts on a daily basis, we typically try to represent the artists best pieces (By our own judgement) to always show them off in their best light. Every once in a rare while we run into artists that we simply can't find a piece we're dissatisfied with, and that is the case with Rich Kelly, who via his incredibly experimental, unorthodox style managed to captivate our attention with every single piece he's created to date.

Using a heavily analog foundation to execute most of his pieces, Mr. Kelly experiments heavily with pushing the art of movie poster compositions to their limit, employing a variety of interesting techniques to make each one distinctly interesting in it's own way. There's a ton of narrative to his posters, especially his incredible Beasts of the Southern Wild poster (After the break), which is an incredible accomplishment in terms of selling the concept of the movie. I just love how his playfulness comes out in every piece, showing off his comfort with his skill level. From Adventure Time to Django, Rich has been a rising star in the Mondo custom poster scene, which has shed a light on his many talents. Check out more of his amazing illustrations after the break.

14 Minimalist Movie Posters Based Off Their Cars

(Via)

Created by Jesús Prudencio, a Spanish web designer and illustrator based out of Seville, Spain who set out to combine his passion for cars and movies into an amazing project simply titled Cars And Films. In this pleasantly minimalist series, Prudencio condensed each of his movie posters into their most iconic vehicle and primary color, ranging from obvious choices like Ghostbuster's Ectomobile to less obvious, clever choices like The Shining's unlikely snow plow, which ultimately becomes the key to escaping complete madness in the Kubrick film.

Simple, yet masterfully executed, Jesús offers us a multi-decade showcase of his favorite passions in one convenient format. All the prints, in both a framed and unframed format can be found on his Etsy shop, for those inclined. Check out the rest of this awesome movie poster series after the break!

The Wonderful Poster Illustrations Of Laurent Durieux

(Via)
With the red sky looming over metropolis, Soundwave exploded through the corner record store that once stood proudly, leaving a trail of despair and destruction behind. Such was the nature of the chaotic Decepticons.

That is the retro-futuristic narrative that played in my head upon stumbling onto Laurent Durieux's latest Transformers flavored piece, a definite thematic departure from his more retro cinematic tributes to classics like The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz, Dracula and Boris Karloff's The Mummy. With over two decades of experience under his belt as a designer and instructor, the Belgian illustrator was just recently discovered by the poster gods over at Mondo, and it's been an upward spiral into prominence ever since.

What struck me the most about Durieux's pieces was the perfect balance of elements, as if the illustrations contained a perfect ratio of visual elements to function, no more, no less. His compositions are entrancing and filled with narrative, nearly boundless, showcasing the level of mastery and sophistication that he's achieved after all these years. Enjoy a small sampling of his recent work after the break.

Mondo unleashed a whole slew of posters related to this years Oscar nominated films, spanning from Tarantino's wild Django Unchained to Paul Thomas Anderson's understated The Master. Check out 8 more amazing posters after the break, and if you've got deep pockets you can try your hand at getting yourself a print over on the auction blocks of Ebay.

18 Awesome Thai Film Movie Posters

Total Recall
Remember our 70 Bootleg Movie Posters, courtesy of traveling movie shows in Ghana? There was something fascinating about seeing how different countries interpreted various movies in the US with a lack of official movie posters, using hand painted recreations to advertise the films being screened.

Once again we've stumbled into a veritable archive of amazing movie posters, this time from Thai movie theaters. I have to say that compared to the movie posters from Ghana though, these hand painted creations are masterpieces in comparison. All the posters seem to be characterized by a pastiche of iconic visual elements and scenes from the movies, with the film's main protagonists typically dominating the compositions. The colorful, bright and sensationalized micro-industry of Thai movie posters have become a part of the nation's cultural heritage, and I can definitely see why. The Dark Knight Rises Gets Some Amazing Fan Posters

(Via)
Have you ever looked at an artist's work and thought "Hire that man/woman, major movie studios!" We feature a large amount of great independent artists on this blog that have a better idea of what the fans want then the studios. This is the case for Messenjah Matt, an artists I stumbled upon recently. He has a number of posters and designs that he has made for fun and use on forums, websites and other such mediums. He has recently finished a set of Dark Knight Rises posters that really put some of the official posters to shame. Check out the collection after the cut because it might just help for the torturous wait until the film is released.

Mondo Presents "The Avengers" Collection

Captain America by Phantom City Creative (Via)
Mondo, the collectible art boutique arm of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, have created some amazing movie posters in the past. Considering my love of comics and my position as comics editor on the site, I just had to show off these amazing pieces. The company announced a while ago that they would be releasing a series of seven posters honoring "Marvel's The Avengers," (which will be released for UK viewers tomorrow) but I waited on posting about it until all seven designs had been released. Now all seven of the posters have been revealed by Marvel.com, and it's one sight to behold.

As with each print Mondo has done, the series will be available for purchase online. Black Widow was sold on April 19 and Hawkeye went on sale on the 20th, and sold out within minutes of release. Hulk and Captain America will be on sale on the 26th, whilst Thor and both Iron Man posters will be available on the 27th. Follow the Mondo news twitter for details on the additional prints in the series and exact sale times. For the rest of us who will never go online in time to own one, you can check out (and envy) the rest of the collection after the break.

10 Dress The Part Posters By Moxy Creative

Keeping that suit blood free. American Psycho (Via)
These posters by Moxy Creative came out a while back, but I'd love to bring them up again because they're on sale again. This series of ten posters was created to illustrate the most distinguishing aspects of iconic movies from a fashion or clothing aspect, as they are one of the components that makes characters memorable and recognizable.

With the exception of the Usual Suspects (A little too abstract) poster, I think these posters did an amazing job capturing the most notable elements of each of the characters from these classic movies. Check out the rest of them after the break!

Minimalist Disney Posters By Rowan Stocks-Moore

(Via)
UK-based graphic designer Rowan Stocks-Moore has a definite knack for minimalist style. Being the avid Disney fan that I am, I did mental cartwheels over his collection of Disney film posters. They paint (no pun intended) a simple and to-the-point portrait of what these movies are essentially about, while still leaving a bit of intrigue. What's even better, is that he has his own Etsy where he's selling said posters!

The 8-Bit Movie Posters Of Eric Palmer

A masterpiece compared to Sucker Punch  (Via)
Remember that glorious era of 8-bit gaming? The blowing on carts, spending hours in front of the TV due to a lack of a save feature, trying to kill that last boss with no continues and just a sliver of health? Those were the hardcore days.

Well Eric Palmer decided to take some of his favorite movies and down res their most iconic moments into a chunky 8 bit format, breaking each scene down into its most minimal state (Insert RAM joke here). Looking over this set of posters you'll realize just how cute films can look after being fed through an NES filter. Check out thirteen more images after the break!

Pascal Witaszek's Faux Movie Posters

(Via)
The internet was abuzz recently with this movie poster, supposedly of a Walt Disney biopic starring Ryan Gosling. The poster was convincing enough to make movie goers (especially Disney fans) super excited in anticipation. Alas, the poster was a fake. French artist Pascal Witaszek made a few more fake posters, though the "Walt" poster is definitely the best. What a mean tease it is as well; I'd love to see what direction Disney studios would take this film. You know, since Walt was apparently not such a nice guy, so they say. I wonder how they'd approach that. Sadly, we'll probably never know.

Mondo's Back To The Future Trilogy

Reprint please? (Via)
I missed out on a chance to pick these up last Friday due to a trip, but this Mondo set paying tribute to the classic Zemeckis movies were too cool to not post. This triptych (Three seperate images that are all thematically intertwined) of posters created by Phantom City Creative  made use of the DeLorean in various pieces to illustrate each of the three entries in the trilogy. The posters were sold for $88 (Get it?) and a variant set of three with matching colors went for $120. Check out the other two parts after the break!

Cool Star Wars Posters by Christopher Lee

(Via)
We haven't been shy about our disapproval of the decision to re-release the Star Wars prequels to theaters (now in 3D). That said, if the prequels do well, and the originals end up being released somewhere down the road, that would be kinda sweet. The originals are certainly classics, and while there is definitely no shortage of fan tributes out there, we thought these movie posters by Christopher Lee pretty awesome.

Biopics Recast With Jar-Jar Binks

 BINK! (Via)
In honor of today's re-release of Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace to theaters (ugh...), we bring you the most beloved grating cinematic character of all-time: Jar Jar Binks. Now, you see, since Jar Jar was so fantastic in The Phantom Menace, someone out there decided to recast several biopics with him instead. To the die-hard Star Wars fan who likes to lovingly leave essays in our comments section (yeah, you know who you are), we lovingly dedicate this to you. COME AT ME.

Mondo's Awesome Planet Of THe Apes Posters

Damn dirty posters! (Via)
We've missed out yet again on an opportunity to score some ridiculously cool Mondo posters. Due to the fact that the sales are always announced on Mondo's Twitter at random times with little forewarning, you've got to stay glued to your screen for a chance to score their limited edition posters.

What did we miss out on this time around? A 6 poster set covering all five of the classic movies, and an Alamo Drafthouse exclusive. The posters were created by Martin Ansin, Ken Taylor, Rich Kelly, Phantom City Creative, Florian Betermeter and Jason Edminston. Check out the rest of them after the break!

Star Trek / Wes Anderson Mashups

(Via)
We're pretty big fans of mashups here at Awesome-Robo, and these posters are no exception.  These two vastly different concepts somehow seem to work together, if only for just a poster (the whole series can be seen here).  From "Fantastic Mr. Fox" to "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou", these posters get the Star Trek treatment.
