Tourist - Illuminate feat. Years and Years

The year is 1992, a man receives a series of love letters written in Korean. Since Google Translate doesn't exist yet, he's left confused. What could this mean? Nicolas Ménard's music video for Illuminate answers this question with a cascade of minimalist pop abstraction and a flush of hypnotic game-boy inspired graphics. In a world that has not yet been mediated by the ubiquity of technology, can love hope to transcend language and culture?

Check the video's equally beautiful tumblr page here. And make sure to drop by Ménard's vimeo page and website if you dig what he's dishing out.

The Monster Hunter Gameboy Demake

(Via)
Capcom's Monster Hunter franchise: The epitome of the love/hate game, an international phenom that continues to grow in popularity despite the punishing initial learning curve (I'm a recent convert). Pixel artist Army Of Trolls (Gary J Lucken) took it upon himself to teleport the awesome franchise to a simpler time, with a truly cool 'what if' version of Monster Hunter if it had been released on the Gameboy, complete with a Link's Awakening style.

Featuring a recreation of the camp scene and a few mocked up battle screens, Lucken absolutely nailed the feel of the game if it had been an 8bit title. If this gets Capcom's attention, I can only hope that they add a 'Stabasco' sword in time for the next installment in honor of this awesome pixel tribute.

The Beep - Eijo

This nostalgia bomb of a music video by the German electro artist known as 'The Beep' was painstakingly put together over a year, pixel by pixel to fit within the hardware limitations of the 8bit 'Brick' Gameboy. As the Beep but it himself:

'This video features real Game Boy resolution and colors and has been painstakingly put together pixel by pixel over a whole year by myself. Most sites are actually real and even the tags can be found around my city. I loved my Game Boy and Super Mario when i was a young kid and my dad used to snatch it to play Tetris (and beating me all the time). This is my tribute to both.'

The track, taken from 'Secondhands Vol. 2' is available via Bandcamp for digital download.

The Obscure Resident Evil Port You've Never Heard Of

With the announcement of Resident Evil 6, the release of Resident Evil: Revelations on Nintendo 3DS and the impending release of Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City a large proportion of the gaming community has one game on their mind: The original Resident Evil port for Gameboy Color.  I recall that a Game Boy Color version of Resident Evil was planned but canceled late in the process by Capcom, who claimed that the port was poor and would not meet customer expectations. It seems the company who forgot that spell-check is a thing that exists was once worried about quality control.

A few weeks ago someone over at Assembler Games came forward with a goal; raise a $2,000 goal he set and he would upload a copy of the abandoned game. The goal was met and now the masses can download and complete the game that was never intended for public play. But considering it was actually abandoned by Capcom would you really want to give this game a go? It surprises me the game was in such high demand considering how many superior ports of Resident Evil have been made over the years. If you're retro inclined though, this one is worth checking out due to the sheer ridiculousness of porting a 32 bit title onto the equivalent of a handheld NES.

Gameboy Music

This isn't your momma's chiptune. This is real Gameboy music, using the system tactilely to produce all the instrumentals of a hot toe-tapping beat. I love it when artists purposefully use arbitrary constraints to create their works. Working within one's limitations to produce something greater than the sum of its parts has always been very impressive to me. Salvo to MrSeberi for a great little video!

Have An Extra Oscilloscope Lying Around?

If you happen to have a spare oscilloscope or an extra $1000 lying around I recommend you give this mod a go.

While I don't quite understand why you would want to turn your portable gaming device into a stationary platform that requires a ridiculous amount of cords, it's still pretty cool. I've done some Gameboy modding myself, but nothing to this degree (plus my soldering skills are pretty pathetic).

If you find this hack interesting I suggest you give a read of how exactly a gameboy image was transferred to a device ment for displaying electrical wave lengths. Check it out here!
