Worth Checking Out - Paper Sorcerer

A little over a year-and-a-half ago Ultra Runaway Games posted a Kickstarer for the first-person turn-based RPG Paper Sorcerer and more than doubled it's initial goal. I've always been a major sucker for first-person dungeon crawlers and while the more recent releases such as Etrian Odyssey and Dark Spire were fantastic entries to the genre, the mechanics of Paper Sorcerer were what completely sold me on the game.

Rather than focusing solely on leveling and powering-up your characters, Paper Sorcerer focuses on a battle's strategy instead overall strength. Similar to the mechanics of the Shin Megami Tensei series, your element can dramatically change the tide of battle, of course this can go both ways. The game features a wide variety of attacks, spells and summons, and when you mix in a turn-timer for each attack you'll find yourself a little more intimate with the battles.

I'd be lying if I said the art style wasn't what originally drew me in. The ink and paper look fits the overall tone incredibly well, and a majority of the attack animations look pretty damn great (despite only being a few frames). Dungeon-crawlers generally hold a relatively niche audience, but Paper Sorcrcer has found itself some solid footing that's a bit more welcoming for newcomers.

The game dropped last Friday on PC, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS for $5, which at that price is a complete steal. To purchase the game and try out the demo head over here to the website.
