The Amazing Custom Model Kits Of MDSP - Master Level

A dash of Gundam, a few Tachikoma from Ghost in the Shell, some Maschinen Krieger with a dash of Armored Core - Those are just a few components of a model kit hobbyists complete breakfast. We just recently unearthed the website of Japanese custom model kit maker/customizer/kitbasher MDSP, who does this work for a living. A master of his craft, the level of detail that he dedicates to each and every piece is nothing short of astounding, showing off just how absorbed he gets into each one of his projects.

Through the painting process and the application of wear on the Zaku above, MDSP successfully conveys an image of a battle hardened veteran unit which has seen it's fair share of time on the battlefield. You can't help but just appreciate someone who truly treats every little miniature as a labor of love from start to finish..His vast gallery houses dozens of amazing projects, but we've hand picked a few for you to check out after the break! For any mech head out there, prepare yourself for some truly amazing eye candy.

Ketagino's Awesome Maschinen Krieger Kitbash

Who doesn't love a little kitbashing? Custom figure maker and Maschinen Krieger fanatic (A scifi/model kit universe created by Kow Yokoyama) Ketagino set out to combine his favorite sets from the Krieger universe to create Yumiru, a construct assembled from pieces of other sets, especially the GANS Panzer, this type of recombining and kitbashing has become prevalent in conceptual fields in recent years, using pieces from various places to create altogether new designs with familiar visual languages.

While Ketagino has crafted quite a few kitbash creations, few have been as successful as his Yumiru, crafted at a 1/35 scale. If you're in the mood to do some kitbashing yourself for free, I'd recommend downloading Google's awesome Sketchup program and using the free 3D warehouse function to find pieces to recombine into an all new designs. The Making Of ProgV's Lifesized Kitbash Mech

Just a mech...but a life size model this time! over 4 meters tall!

These were the words that collectively blew the mind of the internet just a few days ago, when Chinese concept artist Prog Wang showed off what he'd done with his dad's retired Nissan truck. While kitbashing has been a popular concept with model kits and 3D programs like Google's Sketchup, I dont think anyone expected a 13 foot mech that looks like Hawken and reality collided.

Prog just shared a series of making of photos showing off the creation of the MA-TP (Mobile Armored Tactical Platform) mech from start to finish, in all it's gigantic kitbashed glory. Check it all out after the break, along with some notes from the creator himself.

Bhead's Amazing Custom "Biogeneticist Dr. Paul" Toy

Korean concept artist and toy kitbasher extraordinaire Bhead (Jung Yeon Gyun) just unveiled his latest entry to his ongoing Day After WWIII series, featuring a Biogeneticist called 'Dr. Paul' and his equally kitted out monkey sidekick. His backstory for Dr. Paul is that he was a scientist being held against his will in Imperial research labs, working on experiments in genetic engineering and chemical weapons before the apocalyptic WWIII made him a free man once more.

Clad in a retro futuristic containment suit with some mild Fallout vibes, I just love the contrast in materials and attention to detailing that Jung captured with this prototype, down to his sidekick having specially crafted boots for his outfit. If you're unfamiliar with Bhead's work, I'd highly recommend checking out our post on some of his other amazing creations for the series, which have only been released in his home country as limited edition kits. The Miniatures Of Revolve-Gear

Revolve-Gear is the alias for Takumi Takaoka, a Japanese graphic designer by trade with a truly cool hobby on the side as a model kitbasher. For those unaware, kitbashing is a model kit practice in which a new model is created by taking pieces out of different commercial kits and reassembling them into something completely new and unique. The practice has been around for years, and came into prominence in the movie industry when practical effects were still in full swing.

In Japan there's a huge community dedicated to this craft, making use of the plethora of kits to assemble some truly badass new creations without having to build much from scratch. Takumi's approach draws a lot of inspiration from the work and model kits related to Maschinen Krieger, a universe created by Kow Yokoyama in the 80's that mixed scifi aesthetics with World War II era design language. The Art Of Plastic Chamber

I've had a soft spot for model kit bashers since being exposed to them at a hobbyist convention, so finding the work of the Plastic Chamber truly made my night. The group, which is a collective of three Japanese artists: Gerusea, S3 and STEVEN is dedicated to the art of taking existing model kits and combining, painting and modifying them into all new designs.

I try to think of it as working with a much more complex, high end set of Lego pieces. Its an art in itself, which takes a certain mindset to be able to extrapolate the many different, unintended uses of different model kit components. Thankfully Plastic Chamber didn't hold back at all with their work, creating some truly fantastic pieces that you can check out after the break!

Astray Gunframe IV Custom

Steampunk Ironman Is One Of A Kind

Indie sculptor and kitbasher Jonathan Kriscak just put this awesome, one of a kind steampunk Ironman on eBay.  The piece represents an exploration of what a Victorian era Tony Stark would have come up with, and this beast would be hand forged of materials from the era.  Copper, steel, and brass.

Instead of an arc reactor, this Iron Man features a chest full of light up combustion engine to power the mechanical monstrosity. As of when this was posted, the figure is currently up to a $350 bid..So if you're a fan of Ironman and have some cash to spare, go for it.  Kickass.  A ton of images and closeups of the figure after the jump!
