New Deus Ex Trailer Shows A Man Conflicted, A Humanity Divided

For the past three days, Square-Enix has been teasing a reveal of one of their North-American produced titles with an audacious, frustratingly obtuse interactive promotion campaign through Twitch called 'Project: Can't Kill Progress'. Neogaf however had other plans, blowing the lid on Eidios Montreal's Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, the highly-anticipated follow-up to their critically successful reboot/prequel to the Deus Ex franchise.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is set in 2029, two years after the events of Human Revolution, with players re-assuming the role of Adam Jensen; the Cervantes-bearded and lethally-armed (pun entirely intended) protagonist of the previous game as he is recruited by an newly-formed Interpol-funded task force aimed to hunt down and capture augmented terrorists in a world that now hates and fears transhumanism. With a new suite of mechanical augments that allow him to stealthily navigate, socially manipulate and offensively eliminate threats as never before; Jensen must once again maneuver through a shadow-net of proxy-conspiracies and double-agendas in a personal mission to uncover the truth and, by doing so, seek absolution for the havoc he helped to inadvertently unleash.

Human Revolution was one of my favorite titles of 2011, with my only complaints being the gratingly lackluster Boss encounters (a problem partially remedied by the game's Director's Cut Edition) and an overwhelming desire for more free-roaming areas to explore that were cut throughout production (for example, Upper Hengsha and ground-level Montreal). The sobriety and fatalism in this first trailer is chilling. As a long-time fan of the series, I'm looking forward to how this title narratively bridges the gap between Human Revolution's transhumanist renaissance period and the original game's dystopian oligarchic society shepherded by disease and information warfare.

No release window announced as of yet, though if I were to venture a guess, I'd say quarter four of this year only to be inevitably delayed for another quarter or two. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is slated for release on Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

Human Revolution - A Stunning, Fanmade Deus Ex Short Film

Directed by Moe Charif of Dcode films, Human Revolution is a high end, fanmade short film that's been in the works for over 2 years. And honestly, it looks like it was worth the lengthy wait. For anyone familiar with the narrative of the critically acclaimed 2011 followup to Deus Ex, the game follows the story of Adam Jensen, a security consultant who finds himself augmented following an accident that nearly takes his life. This short in particular is more centered around his kidnapped girlfriend Megan Reed, who is asked by her captors to activate a mysterious device against her will.

Upon Adam pinpointing her location, what follows is probably the closest thing we'll ever see to a Deus Ex themed cinematic experience, including some absolutely stunning cyborg action sequences. We're also given a glimpse into Adam's daily struggles with the fate that was handed to him against his will. I never asked for this.

Deus Ex : Human Defiance First Look

Were you hoping for a new Deus Ex game following that tease last night? Well shed your optimism, because April Fools spirit has infected the folks over at Eidos Montreal as well. Now with a coop campaign, as long as you don't mind sharing the screen with a friend.

'Introducing Deus Ex: Human Defiance, the first adventures of Adam Jensen in full, glorious 8-bit.

Human Revolution brought about the cyber-Renaissance, Human Defiance marks the beginning of a Digital Golden Age. Human Revolution was all about triangles. Now we're doubling down, flipping one over and revelling at its brand new form: the square... the pixel. It's a natural evolution! '

Deus Ex: Tiger Handheld Revolution

If Deux Ex: Human Revolution had come out circa 1991 we probably would have had the chance to experience a Tiger Electronics adaptation of the scifi thriller. This little fan made mockup of a handheld encapsulates the game experience in a nutshell, with plenty of cybernetic implants, 'Not asking for this,' hacking and something something...Confucius. I can only hope that these will be included as a preorder bonus with the next installment of the Deus Ex series.  On a related note, if you do want to experience some retro handheld games, you should check out Pica pic.

Deus Ex: Vending Machine Revolution

I'm just about done with Deus Ex, and I remember overhearing this conversation, before taking everyone out with stealthy takedowns and tranquilizer rounds. I thought nothing of it, just another casual conversation between two guards about death by vending machines. Unlike myself, Youtube user TippingForties knew that the conversation wasn't a mere coincidence, and proceeded to find the closest vending machine and give that conversation some serious significance, to the epic music of Ennio Morricone. Pure magic.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution Concept Art

(Via)
It's been quite sometime since I've left you guys a meaty post, and I'm sure you're asking where I've been. With school aside I've been playing the hell out of Deus Ex: Human Revolution (in fact I just beat my second play-through). Much like the original Deus Ex, Human Revolution took myself and many other gamers by surprise. The amount of quality and immersion the game holds was far beyond expectations. The series has always held a special place in my heart, mostly due to my obsession with Snow Crash and Bladerunner, and Human Revolution doesn't disappoint. It's by far one of the best games of 2011.

While I could continue my masturbatory discussion of Deus Ex, that's not at all the reason I'm here. In fact, I'm here to show off these amazing concept pieces by artist, Richard Dumont. The ammount of detail in each of these works is outstanding which truly portrays the amount of thought put into Human Revolution. Hit the break for more!

Eyeborg's Cyborgs: How close is the modern world to cyborg fiction?

This fascinating mini documentary about cyborgs, commissioned by Deus Ex creators to be released in correlation with the game covers the topic of augmentations and current day 'cyborgs.' The main protagonist of the documentary and filmmaker, Rob Spence lost an eye in a shotgun accident and now has an artificial eye with a camera embedded into it. Throughout the documentary he interviews various individuals with different conditions that require artificial limbs, and they cover how far off we are from seeing the type of technology present in the video game. Fascinating stuff.

Deus Ex: Augmentations Gone Wild!

Stereotypical gamer augmentations. (Via)
As a fun contest to promote the game, Square Enix and the Somethingawful forums collaborated to create some uh...interesting applications of human augmentations. The contest is now over, and the winners got a copy of the game, and a ton of other swag. I even submitted my own entry (after the deadline to this contest, which you can see after the break. And by the way, have you played the damn game yet? Its absolutely amazing, on par with the original from 2000. Check out a ton more of these after the break!

Take My Money Valve: The Deus Ex/Team Fortress 2 Incentive

(Via)
Valve is one evil, evil company. I kind of realized today that I hadn't preordered Deux Ex: Human Revolution just yet, and was kind of pondering what system to get it on. That is, until I saw a link to a special Team Fortress 2 page on the official Deus Ex Facebook feed. Within two minutes of seeing this page with its dirty, dirty preorder incentives, I dropped $45 on the PC version, and I'm probably going to start playing Team Fortress 2 again. Two birds with one stone, Valve...You've done it again! Check out why I preordered Deus Ex with a few choice images after the break.

Deus Ex:Tended

With Deus Ex: Human Revolution only a few days away (August 23 fyi), this fan created tribute was submitted by the creator, 3typen as a tribute to Deus Ex. In his own words:

"Your body is a wonderland. A beautiful composition of muscle and bone, something you should take care of and treat right. It's something you should train, and keep clean in order to make the best out of it.

Naturally, you'll reach your own limits someday, but you must not accept this. Science can help you get rid of these limits. Your body is fine as is, but think of it as an unfinished symphony. You can be better, stronger and faster than what you are. We don't follow the old rules, they are a relic of a time long gone. We now have the chance to take a huge step forward...Prepare yourself for the next step of human evolution: Perfection."

Deus Ex

With the release of Deus Ex: Human Revolution just a mere weeks away, its nice to see the Mega64 guys up to their usual, showing off their very own 'superior tribute' to Deus Ex, and crashing a Human Revolution panel in the process. Their interpretation of video game lip syncing, circa eleven years ago absolutely cracked me up. I can't even imagine what that Best Buy employee must have thought. Can't wait to see what these guys come up with next, and I do hope they add trench coats to every playable character in Human Revolution.

Deus Ex: Purity

I have a feeling that Deus Ex: Human Revolution might end up having an amazing story, based off all this backstory related content created with really solid live action, no less. This latest video focuses around the work of Purity First, a group that is fighting to uncover the more sinister intentions that corporations monopolizing the human augmentation market might have. There are also undercurrents of a future in which everyone needs to augment their bodies with implants and cyborg parts in order to stay competitive...A forced hybridization driven by the corporations in order to create a reliance on their product.

Its an interesting scenario to ponder...Seeing how some corporations act in this day and age, with their ruthless tactics for maximizing profit, is this that far off from what might happen when cyborg augmentations are possible? And what about the Big Brother tactics, like being able to turn off peoples implants, mind control people, track their movements without their knowledge (Apple comes to mind) and other awful abuses of power. The video is a genuinely unsettling look at what might happen decades from now, if our technology ever gets to that point. I'm really looking forward to giving this cyberpunk adventure a spin. Check out the hacked corporation website mentioned at the end of the video here: Sarifindustries.com.
