The Thing Trailer: Not Sure If Want
We're living in an age of remakes, reboots and unnecessary sequels/prequels in recent years...And I have to say that this trailer kind of hit nerve with me. This supposed prequel to John Carpenter's 1982 cult classic, 'The Thing' was in my opinion, an incredibly memorable movie about paranoia and fear of the unknown. An alien lifeform that could take the shape of and act like anything we consider terrestrial, including humans...A threat so great that it needed to be contained and destroyed at all costs, lest it reach civilization and cause unspeakable damage.
A few things I'd like to bring up about this trailer that are both encouraging and disconcerting, after the break.
-They are sticking to the John Wood Campbell Jr. story, who wrote the original Thing..including the prequel story. Problem is, the screenplay was prepared by Ronald D. Moore (Battle Star Galactica, Caprica), who appears to have changed quite a few things.
-The movie is in the hands of an unproven director...Matthijs Van Heijningen Jr., who has zero prior movies under his belt. Is this why the trailer felt like something shot for TV? This might also explain the low budget feel of the movie.
-If this is a prequel to the original Thing, why are there Americans in the Norwegian arctic base? In The Thing, all the recorded files from the destroyed Norwegian base seemed to indicate that they hadn't shared a damn thing with Americans, and couldn't even speak a lick of English.
So all in all, I really have mixed feelings about this 'prequel.' And the need for it. What made the original 'The Thing' so creepy was the fact that you had no f***ing idea what had happened at the Norwegian base. Its mostly left to your imagination to figure out what on earth went down at their base. All you know is that they are desperately trying to hunt down and kill a dog headed to the American base, which ultimately costs the remaining Norwegians their lives. If you're so inclined, check out the scene below.
What do you guys think of this prequel/remake 29 years after the original movie came out?
