Brainstorm's Diablo Event Unleashes A Host of Horrors and Heroes

The bad-ass artistic minds behind the Brainstorm collective knock it out of the park yet again with their month-long redesign challenge, this time reinterpreting the iconic imagery, classes and titular adversary of Blizzard Entertainment's classic dungeon-crawling series Diablo. Many of the results this past week impressively (if predictably) skew across the spectrum of sci-fi action, though a majority of the pieces submitted retain the distinctive gothic-horror flavor of the original.

Brainstorm mainstay Chen Nambiarooran (previously featured for his impressive 'Darth Vader' series) returns with some downright devilish-looking creature and class designs, joined by the likes of Luis Lashido, Tomaislav Jagnijc, and Lennart Verhoeff's impressively menacing profile portraits. Brainstorm Community re-imagines Tony Stark as a "Steam-Punk Iron-Man"

I first discovered the Brainstorm Concept Art Community Group via social media a few weeks back. The thing that struck me the most about the group's atmosphere was in how inviting they were to artistic newcomers of all degrees of technical skill and aesthetic temperament. As soon as I saw the results of the group's last major community event, "Steam-Punk Iron-Man", I knew I had to shine a spotlight on them.

This project turned out a wealth of varying reinterpretations and re-imaginings of the venerable "Genius-Millionaire-Playboy-Philanthropist", from Jason Kang's Rockwellian portrait pictured above, to Giby Joseph's Pyromaniacal snow-trooper,  Cheung Chung Tat's Iron-Gojira and Daniele Orlandini's phantom-like aviator, there's a wealth of inspiring creativity and familiar weirdness just below the break!

Community Spotlight: Creatures Forming - Astronaut In The Aftermath And Bitchin' By Kenny Smith

Today's community spotlight features the works of Matthew Wade, an indie filmmaker and animator based out of LA and Kenny Smith, an animator and fan of AwesomeRobo. Matthew's music video above was created entirely by him over the course of 7 months, featuring a minimal electro soundtrack that builds up over time interspersed with abstract visualizations of circuit boards, pulsating with electricity. Mr. Wade is also in the middle of funding for a Kickstarter his indie movie called 'How The Sky Will Melt,' which you can check out here.



Kenny Smith's short called 'Bitchin' on the other hand was nothing short of nightmare fuel, which I guess was the intention. The only description we got was 'A frustrated driver caught in a traffic jam discovers that roadworks are a cover-up for silicone mining dogs with large mammaries.' Using an odd mixture of rotoscoped animation and abstract backgrounds, I could totally see a show done in this style fitting perfectly in with the Adult Swim lineup.
