Wooha! While we initially thought that Cancer was a Japanese artist based off of his taste in subject matter, we quickly realized that the talented 23 year old illustrator actually hails from China. That's what kind of tipped us off about his work, the fact that it was so uncharacteristically painterly for fanart. Not saying that this level of rendering doesn't exist in the Japanese fanart scene, it's just rare.
Cancer's artistic upbringing with a lot of traditional mediums is front and center here, featuring a really cool rendering style that mimics painterly brush strokes and a fantastic grasp on subtle color variation. This imbues his tribute pieces to franchises including Jojo's Bizarre Adventure and Kill La Kill with a level of refinement that's truly above and beyond what we're used to seeing from fanart. Couple that with a smattering of really cool personal pieces and you've got one solidly rounded out illustrator. Check out more of his awesome work after the break.
Since Trigger Studio's inception two years ago, I have been avidly awaiting for the day we would be treated with their first full length series. Compromised mostly with the team behind Gurren Lagann, FLCL, and Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt there's absolutely nothing I could see going wrong. Earlier last year, the studio released Little Witch Academia and showed us the studio's passion for quality animation without falling into the overuse of CGI like many popular Anime. The studio's knack for fast-pace action definitely doesn't fail to deliver, and looks absolutely beautiful in motion.
Kill la Kill is the studio's first televised series, which will begin this October, and while it's only a month away Trigger has been kind enough to provide us with 3-minutes of amazingness. While it's been announced the story revolves around a school ruled by the high school president only to be flipped upside-down by a transfer student, there's obviously quite a bit more to the story than what we were initially lead to believe. The animation for this is looking top-notch, and I'm really digging the character design, while it's only a month away I'm already on the edge of my seat with anticipation.
Studio Trigger is probably the most exciting thing to happen in the
Japanese animation world for quite some time. After the fantastic work
put into Little Witch Academia, the amount of hype for the studios next project, KILL la KILL is astronomical.
Directed
by ex-Gainax director Hiroyuki Imaishi (Dead Leaves, Gurren Lagann,
Panty & Stocking), this new series is definitely something worth
keeping an eye on if only for the fact that it represents the studio's
first televised series. While not much has been released for the
upcoming series, the above teaser is a pretty good represen-. . .
alright, it's a f*cking tease and I really want to see more. C'mon
Trigger, give us more!
After the break are three promotional images that give a bit better look at the main character of the series.
