Most Unexpected Surprise Of E3: Xcom

If you just watched the trailer above, it would probably lead you to believe that this game is no more than an FPS with a generic 60's setting. Having been a big fan of the tactics and squad management heavy Xcom from back in the day, I was kind of underwhelmed and concerned as to the direction I had percieved from the trailer. We got a chance on Thursday to check out the actual game behind closed doors at the 2k booth and all walked out pleasantly surprised. Read more after the jump!

The trailer failed to show off the engrossing tactical gameplay and narrative driven story that was simply skimmed over. More impressive was the fact that the team from 2k Marin actually decided to completely revisit the game to address their own concerns with the gameplay being too foreign from what made the Xcom such a cult classic. The idea that the aliens are attempting to terraform earth into something they can inhabit, a form of techno-organic corruption that rips the landscape apart and leaves extrusions of dark, glowing material everywhere was impressive to see in game. I have a feeling this game will have the most original, different gameplay of all other E3 entries this year. Part real time strategy, part fps, part RISK..I'm looking forward to this one.
