Childish Gambino - Sober

The music video for Childish Gambino's latest mix-tape single proves, yet again, that actor/song-writer Donald Glover and director Hiro Murai make a creative force to be reckoned with. Sober opens with a disheveled and sullen-eyed Gambino staring at a young woman seated across from him in a take-out diner. After wrestling with the decision to go up and talk to her, he lurches over like the living dead to sit next to her.

No, he's a zombie, he's just really really high. Though the video does have an undeniable Thriller-vibe about it, with Gambino launching himself into a full-on phantasmagoric display of dance moves in an attempt to woo this mysterious young stranger.  Ian Eastwood deserves a resounding round of applause for his exquisite choreography direction.

The Art of Nesskain

What is it about Nesskain's artwork that arrests my attention? It could be the way that each of his pieces manages to feel intimate without necessarily being erotic. It could be the ethereal palettes of his digital paintings, or the intricacies of his pen and ink comic layouts. Maybe it's his subject matter, juxtaposing urban surrealism with sci-fi subtlety. Maybe it's something that escapes me right now, dancing beyond the cusp of words. Whatever it is, I like it.

Nesskain is the nom-de-plume of Hong Kim-Seang, a professional comic artist and illustrator from France. He counts both Hayao Miyazaki and Hideki Anno as his inspirations, which isn't surprising given his character and mech designs. It only gets better after the break.

Palm Springs

Inspired by a cheerful 1950's Palm Springs tourism video, animator Conor Whelan set out to create a homage to the sun kissed resort city, and the never ending optimism that dominated that post WWII era. Featuring a classic track by Bobby Vinton that reflected the times as well as an appropriately boxy aspect ratio, you'll find yourself transported into a simpler time..A time when anything seemed possible.

Glance

Academy Plus (or A+) along with Conkerco created this lovely short film entitled Glance. Centered around just that, a glance, we're shown a brief moment in time when two strangers cross paths. In a very emotional, if over-romanticized, montage we see the two strangers catch each other in eye contact, and follow the subsequent "What if?" scenarios play out in their minds. While perhaps somewhat over-the-top in theory, the execution is rather simple: Two people simply enjoying each other's company.  It's a reminder of the simple things in life, that aren't exactly so simple to acquire.

Comic-Con 11: Captain America Proposes

The Captain finally fights the ultimate enemy, loneliness. At Comic-Con, a Captain America cosplayer proposed to his girlfriend on the Avenger Shield Helicarrier that was set up to hype the film. If you can think of anything more romantic then you aren't at Comic-Con.
