Morning Ritual

Eric Power's Morning Ritual is a heart-warming short that takes a daily routine that all fathers and parents have in common and puts a wonderfully whimsical spin on it.

Combining stop-motion animation, puppetry, photographic backgrounds and ambient early morning sounds from his home, Power animates the early morning ritual of a monster dad who just wants his little one to catch some shut-eye. The construction paper DIY aesthetic definitely reminds me of nickelodeon's early live-action programs like Blues Clues or Gullah Gullah Island. Massive nostalgia moment right now.

The Art Of YongSub Noh

Giants seem to be all the rage nowadays. With the fantastic Attack on Titan and Guillermo del Toro's masterful Kaiju film Pacific Rim there certainly isn't a shortage. While both works do their part at creating some incredible scale, YongSub Noh has perfected the craft, offering some incredibly perspectives and beautiful creatures.

Each of YongSub's pieces creates an incredible dynamic with the creatures of his world and the environments the inhabit. The design of both the giants and the environments is absolutely phenomenal and sits with the best of the giants. After the break are nine more incredible pieces for you to gawk at.

Sculptures by Shing Yin Khor

Artist Shing Yin Khor (aka Sawdust Bear) created this awesomely adorable series for the Stranger Factory's Subterrane Exhibit. She's an artist who is influenced by 'bad science, historical hoaxes, and cabinets of curiosities,' which makes her entry into this particular exhibit very appropriate.

Not only are the bright colors she used eye poppingly appealing, but also how innocent she portrayed each figure. While they look extremely odd and other-worldly, they also come off as very harmless. Perhaps even, sweet? If you're in the Albuquerque area November 9 - December 2, definitely go check this show out! More after the break!

Ken Reid's Creepy Creations

We just came across this awesome retro monster characters, created in the 70's by the late British comic artist, Ken Reid. This series is all about the grotesque, yet cartoon-y things that just might possibly go bump in the night. Reid captured a real sense of personality in each of his terribly awesome "abominations". I don't know about you, but these would make badass trading cards!

Hotel Transylvania : The First Peek

We're always on the lookout for a great animation here at Awesome-Robo (in case you haven't noticed...). As of late, we've been finding that most full-length features can be pretty hit-or-miss (the most recent hit being The Secret World of Arrietty). On the horizon is this old school monster inspired flick, Hotel Transylvania. The vocal cast is rounded out by Adam Sandler, Kevin James, and David Spade, among others. While I worry about this past-their-prime (in terms of talent) cast, I'll try to reserve judgement until the film comes out in September (or at least until we get a trailer). Hey, it does have the redeeming factor of Steve Buscemi, after all.

The general synopsis of the film is this: Dracula runs a monsters and ghouls only hotel, and invites the crew over for his daughter Mavis' coming of age birthday (which is 118, BTW). The motto of the hotel is "Human Free since 1898", which all changes when a backpacker named Johnny stumbles upon the hotel, and falls for Mavis. Dracula finds out, and instead of kicking him out, decides to disguise Johnny as a monster, and gives him the moniker Johnnystein. All of this is done to ensure the comfort of the other ghoulish guests, who wish to party and vacation human-free. This could be a fun near-Halloweentime flick. We'll keep you posted!
