Captain Harlock Gets A New Trailer : Space Pirates

Toei's adaptation of Leiji Matsumoto's famous Captain Harlock just got an awesome new trailer, featuring a little more backstory about his conflict against the Gaia Coalition. The dubbing and the quality of the visuals is pretty damn impressive, which shows that Toei really cares about giving this series a proper adaptation after numerous failed attempts to give it a cinematic treatment. Seeing his infamous skull emblazoned Battleship Arcadia at that type of visual fidelity is pretty awe inspiring. The film is scheduled for release sometime this fall, with international post production already underway. With screenings at the Cannes film festival slated for mid May, we'll know soon enough whether this movie is up to snuff.



'It is 2977 and for many years a mighty battle has been raging across the galaxies as now, 500 billion humans, whose forebears were exiled from Earth, plan to return to what is still called home. Forced to flee a ravaged Earth, humans have now depleted the corners of the galaxy to which they fled. Disney Gives Us A Glimpse Of "Big Hero 6"

For the first time in history, Disney is going to be borrowing from comics for an upcoming animated project, the result of their acquisition of Marvel three years ago. The source material is a little on the baffling side too, opting to borrow from an obscure mini-series called Big Hero 6, a 1998 mini series which came around the time that Marvel was (Unsuccessfully) trying to tap into the burgeoning Japanimation market while it was in full boom.



The movie is going to star Hiro Hamada, a specialist in robotics and his mechanical friend Baymax- who team up with a group of fresh crime fighters to save...San Fransokyo. This teaser gives us a first glimpse at this high tech, stylized city. The  movie is slated for a November 7, 2014 release.

Dreamworks Unveils A New Turbo Trailer

Longtime Dreamworks artist/writer David Soren (Shrek, Madagascar, How To Train Your Dragon) will be making his directorial feature debut this year with Turbo, based off of his own original concept. Featuring a premise similar to a hero origin story, it seems like Turbo will focus on one very unordinary snail's powers and his dream to win the Indy500. It's a fun premise, and the art direction seems solid, so here's to hoping that it's not going to fall into the forgettable Dreamworks movie category (Megamind, Monsters Vs Aliens, Shrek XIV).

The Legend of Sarila

Quebec's first 3D CGI film was just released there recently, and will also show at TIFF's (Toronto International Film Festival) Kid Festival. 'The Legend of Sarila' is the story of an Inuit clan facing famine, while unbeknownst to them the famine is work of their shaman, who has turned to dark magic. But there might be hope in the mythical land of Sarila, located hidden among the glaciers.

The film's most notable star is Oscar winner and Canada-native Christopher Plummer.  Upon first glance, I'm not a huge fan of the 3D art, it comes across a bit stiff.  But there's something about the overall look, and primarily the story, that he piqued my interest. We'll be on the lookout for a US release, if any.

Blue Sky's EPIC Movie Trailer Gives Us Dejavu

First came Fern Gully, then came an epic movie called Avatar, next year: EPIC. The folks at Blue Sky seem intent on turning these eco warrior films into a genre, with a CG entry to complete the triforce of nature saving flicks. They've also chosen a pretty unfortunate title for their movie, which will result in a ton of confusion if you attempt to talk to someone about this film. Picture this:

'Hey, did you get a chance to check out that EPIC movie trailer?'
'What trailer?'
'The EPIC trailer. Wait, EPIC movie?'
'What?'
'Oh f*** it.'

That aside, the plot is as follows: 'A teenager finds herself transported to a deep forest setting where a battle between the forces of good and the forces of evil is taking place. She bands together with a rag-tag group of characters in order to save their world -- and ours.'

Stylistically the movie looks awesome and I'm sure I'll check it out, but the current vibe I'm getting still feels a little too close to the other source material mentioned. Let's hope Blue Sky has something else up their sleeve to help them stand out from the rabble.

The Brave Knock-Off Film

Disney Pixar's Brave hasn't even been released yet, and already a cheap knock-off has been made. With stiff animation and cheesy lines, we shouldn't expect much more from the folks who also made Life's A Jungle. We understand that originality has been going for a premium these days, but such blatant rip-off's just seem completely uncalled for. That said, they're hard not to subject yourself to (that might be just us...). Listed for $25 on Amazon, but at a discounted price of $19.99 (score?), the DVD will be released on June 19th. But it'll also be available for live streaming, because how can you wait for the DVD to arrive?

Hotel Transylvania : Teaser Trailer

Less than two weeks ago, we brought you a sneak peek at the art of the upcoming animated flick, Hotel Transylvania. A teaser trailer was released short thereafter, but because it was in Russian (and I believe many of the uploads were immediately removed), I decided to hold off. But just yesterday, Sony released their English language trailer for us to take a gander at. First impressions are that the animation seems a little on the stiff side, but I'll wait for a few more trailers to really draw a proper conclusion. The art style seems rather appealing, and the premise seems fun enough that it might warrant a watch. With Genndy Tartavosky at the helm, I'm still very optimistic that this will be a solid entry for Sony's animation studio.
