Portrait Of A Sound Design Artist

I've always loved the role that sound designers have played in the movie and gaming industry, an under-appreciated role to say the least. Tasked with recreating any existing sound using some very unlikely means, their ultimate goal is to create a facsimile of a sound that an average person would find believable. As you could imagine, being asked to deliver the sound of bones breaking would be a pretty gnarly challenge, but any sound designer would know that recording balsa wood being cracked in half would deliver the same effect.

Ever since reading an article regarding the sound design in Quake 2 (The BFG sound effect was created by sticking a condom wrapped mic into a bath with running water) I've had an appreciation for the ingenuity of these aural engineers. This doc by Storm+Shelter gives us an intimate look into the average day of someone in this field.

A man standing alone in a shed hitting a bath with a mallet could be seen as mad, but in the world of sound design, it's the norm. Ali Lacey is an eccentric sound design artist, and this short portrait allows us a closer look into the world of sound design.
