Space Pirate Captain Harlock Getting The Feature Treatment
Based off one of Leiji Matsumoto's famous space operas that dominated the anime scene in the 70's and 80's, Captain Harlock is finally getting a feature length treatment in CG courtesy of Toei Animation. First teased in 2010, the project has now been dubbed as one of the companies most ambitious projects yet, with a production budget estimated at around 30 million dollars.
The series's archetypal character had a cultural impact in Japan, lauded for his stoic nature, fearlessness and noble cause. During his most desperate battles aboard his starship Arcadia, he would typically be seen wearing the number 42, which I didn't realize till years later as being the Japanese number associated with death. Considering that the trailer is being presented in English, we can only hope that Toei is planning for an international release. The movie is currently slated for a 2013 release.
