Foster The People: Houdini
I really enjoyed this new Foster The People music video for what it represented creatively, the conundrum of the commercial artist. The track, which came from their excellent 2011 debut album called 'Torches' explores the well known issues of talent exploitation and attempting to maintain an original identity throughout a commercial career.
The way the music video goes about narrating this is pretty clever, featuring the entire band being killed off by an unfortunate accident and reanimated as puppets through the choice of unscrupulous managers. In a way it kind of showcases how some people in the upper levels of creative fields impersonally regard talent as 'products' rather than people, and attempt to mold into things that they're not. A catchy music video with a powerful message.
