A New Way to Photograph War

Danfung Dennis, an award-winning war documentarian, is tired of the trite and mundane methods of capturing images of conflict. He proposes that audiences today have been so inundated with static photographs and banal film coverage, that they have grown numb to war coverage. His solution is to develop a new way to photograph war that combines the still image and video with VR technologies to offer a tactile and immersive way of experiencing our media. He calls this system "Condition 1," which is currently in development for use on the iPad and other tablets for mid-2011.

There are two ways to look at this for use in journalism: either as an exciting new opportunity for photojournalists, or ultimately detrimental towards ethics. Wherever your position may lie on this new form of capturing media, it goes without saying that its development will be undoubtedly very interesting to follow. Personally, I'd like to see this VR technology fleshed out and utilized in film, because compositionally I find there to be more interesting possibilities than with the current 3D technologies that plague our cineplexes.
