Superbrothers: Sword & Sorcery EP

S:S&S EP is a video game collaboration between Toronto musician Jim Guthrie and developer Capy (Critter Crunch, Might & Magic DS). For those of us who have been following along, we've been waiting for its release quite some time, and it finally looks as if its arrival is almost here. The video above is a fun, self-aware twist on the conventions found in video game trailers. It perfectly sets the tone for what I imagine the game will be like: slick, funny, bizarre and all kinds of intelligent. The game will be available on Apple's App Store for the iPad at launch, preceding the iPhone and iTouch versions.

The mindset in which the game is developed under excites me. It's developed less of a toy and more of an experimentation between music and interactive media. From the S&S website:
It's a mix of laid-back exploration, careful investigation & mysterious musical problem-solving occasionally punctuated by hard-hitting combat encounters. S:S&S EP is an unusual genre-bending effort with an emphasis on sound, music & audiovisual style that has been positioned as 'a brave experiment in Input Output Cinema'.
Personally, I love the term "Input Output Cinema;" it's a great compromise to the cliché term "cinematic" in reference to video games. As games strive more and more to be like films, they lose sight of what makes their medium unique: interactivity. "Input Output Cinema" encapsulates both worlds as experiential and interactive works. Regardless, the game looks to be a somber audio-visual experience, perfect for winding down after a long day, or enjoying during a morning commute. Its presentation is slick -- a great balance between pixel-heavy retro aesthetics and modern design sensibilities. Needless to say, i'm digging the project, and I hope to see more artist-developer collaborations hit the indie gaming scene in the future.
