Throwback Thursday: Everything I Can See From Here

Salutations Awesome-Robonauts! I'm happy to report that we've successfully managed to survive another 365-day circuit around the sun. Now that everyone is coasting off a two-day stretch of toast-making and nursing hangovers, let's spare a moment to throwback to London-based animation house The Line's exquisitely bizarre short, Everything I Can See From Here.

Making friends is easy, if you know how...

It's a story as old as time. Two buddies are having tossing a ball around in a junkyard, marveling at the force of Earth's gravity, when a strange creature with luminescent dreads materializes out of the folds of space to join in on their game. To say things do not go as well is an understatement.

This short is a true diamond in the rough. The strong reliance on ambient sound design and pantomimic gestures, combined with the expert balance between soft and hard color pallets is powerfully reminiscent of Genndy Tartakovsky at his best. I'm pleased Everything I Can See From Here has finally made its way onto Awesome-Robo's radar. Snap!

In an attempt to get her teachers attention after witnessing her classmate snap his fingers to answer a question, the girl in Snap accidentally breaks space and time by accidentally emulating his actions. What unfolds is a potential catastrophe of epic proportions, as the past, present and future collide in a rather hilariously unexpected clusterf**k.

Animated by Tommy & Marcus Vad Flaaten, the short is presented in a children's drawing style, perhaps as a riff off of the premise, which seems like it could have been dreamed up by a kid in preschool.

The Awesome Art Of Bibo X

As the gray unrelenting winter season rolls in, artists like Bibo X bring us a breath of fresh air with their colorful, refreshing art styles. Based out of the coastal city of Xiamen in Southeast China, Bibo X's art is quite a departure from the painterly, badass concept artists that we see emerging from the region on a daily basis..Sharing more in common with more stylized artists like Zhichao Chai (A must see), his art mixes his love of scifi and colorful palettes with a regional version of an anime aesthetic.

The way his designs are pushed and exaggerated definitely brings to mind the work of Akira Toriyama, who's work exuded a similar playful feel. Check out more of his awesome commercial and personal work after the break!

Let's Play

Amy Fletcher's video Let's Play is a playful exploration of various visual tricks using her screen capture software and various boardgame parts to create a fun little video. A lot of sleight and hand, and it actually got me wondering how fun it would be to play some of these traditional games via Skype or other video sharing services like Google Hangouts.

By means of this piece, I am exploring the potential of film to create communications between two and three dimensionality. This is a playful look at the contemporary tool of 'screen capture' now installed on almost all computers. So come on and lets play.

The Art Of Evan Palmer

Evan Palmer won me over with the above image, masterfully combining the adorable with the face meltingly deadly. The Minneapolis based comic book artist got his start in Lafayette, Louisiana before transferring over to the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, where he graduated in 2008. 

Evan worked on the Eisner-nominated series The Unwritten for 2 years before going solo, and I really love what he's been cranking out on his Tumblr recently. His playful style makes efficient use of clean ink work and watercolor, with some experimentation in digital mediums. Check out more of his art after the break!
