The Tale Of A Rebellious Stone (NSFW)
Tale of a Rebellious Stone is a truly fascinating, and thematically loaded animated short regarding the concepts of faith and our animalistic desires. From what I managed to interpret, the statue itself represents the pure facade, or front that many people maintain in an attempt to hide their true, 'raw' core that represents their true desires. As the narrative unfolds over a variety of days, the sculptor finds himself tempted time and time again, until a surreal scenario unfolds.
Absolutely loved the feature quality animation and scenario that director Ng Kai Chung set up with this short, produced by a relatively unkown collective called KC.5. The short is rife with symbolism, and will most probably be interpreted in a variety of ways-Yet in a way the approach taken here reminds of the way series like Evangelion married religious themes into their narratives. Quite possibly one of the most thought provoking, and darker animated shorts I've seen in a long while.
A stone, with its unflawed surface, was carved and polished by beliefs and rules.Yet the core is raw. The more eager you are try and smooth it out, the more eager it is to indulge itself. Its untamed nature is no longer restrained.
