Hàlma

Thomas Fournier's Hàlma (Greek for leap) is a beautifully surreal endeavor, centered around a faceless long jump athlete alone in an arena blanketed in darkness, trapped in his own thoughts prior to making a fateful last attempt. The stark imagery is elevated thanks to the excellent sound treatment, which effectively establishes an atmosphere of great unease to the scenario unfolding within this oppressive environment.

The entire short drew some parallels for me with the legend of Sisyphus (Cursed to forever fail to carry out a task), especially when he imagines himself faced with an insurmountable obstacle in front of him, perhaps a fate reserved to him if this last jump were to fail. Amazing imagery, and an excellent job at creating a truly unsettling atmosphere by Mr. Fournier.
