Immersive Media: So Many Possibilities

The Dodeca 2360 System.  11 streams of coverage.

After yesterdays article that Nathan covered about a new way to photograph war, I received a tip about a Portland based firm called Immersive Media , a company that specializes in 360 degree immersive technology.  I'm surprised this hasn't been more actively covered by tech blogs, but I would love to get my hands on one of these. Using a total of 11 video streams, the camera can build a fully interactive 360 degree view of the world around it.  And at 2.5 pounds and a resolution of 2400x1200, this device is no pushover.

In terms of practical applications, people have barely scratched the surface regarding the potential of the device. Imagine sending one of these up to the international space station or combining this with a VR helmet with head tracking.  Just imagine that.  You could experience a place thousands of miles away from the comfort of your own home with 360 degree interactive video.  This could be the start of something a lot bigger.  A fully interactive example after the jump.

  1. From what I read, this company shut down then was reopened by former management but without any of the creative staff?

A few years ago this seemed pretty cool. Now, when you can shoot 360 video with our iPhone for $50 bucks, I don't know?

From the looks of it, Immersive Media or Immersive Ventures whatever they are now aren't showing much new work. Though I found one porn click (really, no kidding) that has Immersive Media's watermark on it:

NSFW: http://www.digitalplayground.com/v360.php which is some of the worst shot video ever and pretty uuuugly people on screen to boot. Is this what Immersive Media is up to now?

  2. I'm guessing they've kept their operations on the DL Bob, but they have managed to probably score some ridiculously lucrative contracts with Google for the google maps initiative. If they released a cheaper, user friendly version of such a device I think people would love it.

They might also have no competition in the field, and have a lesser need to innovate. Look at Wacom with their touch screen interfaces for artist..They haven't innovated or updated the technology in probably 6-7 years due to lack of competition in that niche sector. Who knows what the deal is..but it could definitely be pushed further.
