Comicalu - Anime And Food Collide

Japanese company Comicalu has been making waves recently with their clever kitchen creations, including their anime themed plates and most recently, their 'Niku' (Meat) bone. For a wallet destroying $56, you can get the chance to recreate a facsimile of the cartoonish meat rations that seem to be a staple of anime, except it's actually bread that you bake on to it. Upstairs

We've all been there (At least I'd like to hope so), sitting in an apartment with thin walls while mystery noises lead you to wonder what type of person is tormenting your ears at night. Imaginations run wild and we automatically assume the worst about that other person, but Upstairs demystifies that notion in a truly playful, creative fashion. With it's isometric perspective, quirky animation style and distinct, 'cubed' way of presenting an annoyed neighbors thoughts, it's a solid short that makes me happy I don't have to deal with this type of stuff anymore.

A short story about how much we know - or want to know - about the lives of our next door neighbours in urban flats. An inexplicable sound from the flat above leaves Jeff sleepless and anxious to find out the truth about what's really going on upstairs. UPSTAIRS was commissioned by Channel 4's short film programme Random Acts in the UK and produced by Not To Scale London in association with Lupus Films. 

The Event

New York based Julia Potts' The Event is a bizarre post apocalyptic event told in reverse, narrating how everything slowly fell apart for the unfortunate mammalian protagonists. The hazy, quirky visual style works well with the poetic narrative, and really reminded me of Tatsuo Sato's equally bizarre Cat Soup, which ranks up there as one of the most bizarre, yet enjoyable movie experiences I've ever had. The short was commissioned for Channel 4's Random Acts initiative.

Rex Velvet: A Real Life Superhero Gets His Villain

I never thought I've live to see the day that I'd be able to see comic book storylines play out in real life, but it looks like the self proclaimed Seattle villain called 'Rex Velvet' has just made it a reality. The video kind of feels like an elaborately produced taunt to all the real life superheroes, who seemed to come out of the woodwork following 2010's 'Kickass' movie. The film spawned an entire movement of real life comic book characters, most notably Phoenix Jones, who operates out of Seattle and has garnered a decent amount of media coverage with his alliance, the ten member group called the Rain City Superhero Movement. Similar chapters have spawned around the nation under various monickers.

Its a fun idea, with Rex mainly focusing around the fact that these real life superheroes are just a nuisance and more trouble than they're worth. Whether or not Rex actually plans to take any action, It'll be entertaining to sit back and watching how this whole mini drama unfolds.

The Master's Voice By Guilherme Marcondes

Guillerme Marcondes released this teaser for his new project recently, and its looking like its going to be pretty compelling. If you remember Guillerme, we featured him a while back for his excellent opening credits to Guy Moshe's Bunraku, which impressed us with its mixed media approach. His upcoming short called The Master's Voice takes a similar approach, offering live action, 3D and 2D animation coexisting in the same underbelly of a retro-futuristic world. Stay tuned for the release.

6 Maroquinaris Zoologicae by Billie Achilleos

British artist Billie Achilleos sure has found herself a pricey way to create some rather interesting sculptures.  I couldn't imagine cutting up Louis Vuitton accessories and apparel (I can't imagine myself buying it in the first place, but that's neither here nor there).  I just wouldn't be able to bring myself to do it.

Against all belief though, Ms. Achilleos has and she's created some really fun, and quirky pieces using the premium fashion accessories as a collaboration with Louis Vuitton. Check out 6 unique, and probably insanely pricey LV sculptures after the break!

Natsumi's 17 Acts Of Levitation

Yowayocamera is the brain child of Natsumi Yowayowa, an aspiring female photographer who lives in Tokyo with her two cats. Her website has been dedicated to her obsession with capturing herself in surreal moments of levitation around the country. Using a unique technique involving some ridiculously fast shutter speed, she regularly captures herself in some very surreal situations around Tokyo. The Brick Thief

It only takes a few bricks to build something. As part of a semi viral campaign to promote Lego using the catch phrase Cl!ck, these awesome videos were created. I loved the skipped frame aspect of these shorts, and the creepy ass Lego collector that just can't get enough Lego's and has to snatch more via random portals. Its quirky awesomeness all around.
